Not all mines were created as a coherent mining initiative. In ancient times, especially when a particular mineral was not in the hands of the ruler, residents often took the initiative in their own hands. So it was in Chelm, when the locals digging in their own cellars discovered quite rich deposits of chalk. This sedimentary rock was used in various ways, not only on school boards, as we see it today. It's been used both in construction and manufacturing of paints. It was so precious that all the streets in the city were literally undermined by a dense network of tunnels. This caused quite a dangerous situation, as the whole town houses and cars were in the past absorbed by the collapsed underground.

Fortunately, this situation has been brought under control and today Chelm underworld serves tourists. The tourist route open to the public is about 2 km. For safety reasons, sightseeing is done only with a guide. On the way we visit the mysterious chalk chambers and intricate corridors. Children will love hanging here and there plastic bats and spiders.

For fans of strong sensations you can meet here the underground spirit of the Bieluch. Well, each of the visitors can expect to find the treasure, which according to legend is to be found in here somewhere.
