Doorwerth Castle – Museum

Doorwerth Castle also known as Dorenweerd is a beautiful medieval castle, located on the banks of the river Rhine.

The first mention of the castle in historical documents, at that time made of wood, come from 1260, making it one of the oldest castles in the Netherlands. The original construction of the castle was very simple, two stories high living room with walls over a meter thick and the surrounding moat fed with water from a nearby river. The castle was devastated and rebuilt numerous times, and from the fourteenth century continuously expanded. The castle belongs today to the famous Bilderberg family.

Today it houses a museum, which is divided into three thematic exhibitions: the inhabitants of the Middle Ages, hunting and painting.

Castle is surrounded by a beautiful garden, in which, inter alia, you can see one of the oldest trees in the Netherlands, Robinia pseudoacacia with a trunk circumference of nearly 7 meters.
