The Pretoria Zoo, whose official name is the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa is one of the largest zoos in the world and one of the most popular.
The zoo in Pretoria has a tradition reaching almost as long as even the oldest zoos in Europe. It was established in 1899, just after the Boer War. The area of 85 hectares is divided into two parts, one of which is a flat, level ground and the other has numerous hills and ridges. These two areas are separated by the river Apies, which in Africaans means "monkeys".
Currently there are over nine thousand animals, residing in the zoo, representating more than 700 species. The biggest impression on visitors makes the African savanna, where lions, elephants , mountain zebras, black and white rhino, leopard and many more. In addition to the typical animals of the continent will also meet Bengal tigers Congolese mountain gorillas, Malayan tapirs, kangaroos, red pandas and koalas, loved by children. An aquarium and a terrarium couldn't be missed here, so you can admire a large collection of exotic animals.
A great convenience to the public, especially guests with young children, and also a big attraction is the opportunity to visit the zoo with golf carts. The fee for the rent is about ZAR 80 per hour.
Another unusual attraction is the cable car ride, enabling you to watch the zoo from a different perspective. Prices for this attraction are also encouraging - about 1 USD.
The zoo has two restaurants, four bars, a snack bar or you can arrange a picnic on your own and relax in the shade of large trees, of which there is definitely no shortage here.
Definitely a place worth recommending .
